Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non surgical and not invasive treatment option to stabilize hair loss and encourage hair regrowth. LLLT treatments use a very low energy light to penetrate the tissues of the scalp to dilate blood vessels and stimulate microcirculation of oxygen and blood supply. Many papers have been published to support the mechanism of LLLT to slow, stop or reverses hair loss. Medical research explains possibly why LLLT is a safe, effective and viable hair recovery treatment protocol.

The laser light increases tissue oxygenation and cellular respiration in the mitochondrial level increasing the level of ATP (cell energy) production. In the capillary networks, light from the laser separates nitric oxide from cytochrome oxidase (CCO). CCO is an enzyme that displaces oxygen and reduces cellular respiration when binding to nitric oxide. Lower tissue oxygen levels are observed in balding and hair thinning regions of the scalp. Improving scalp tissue oxygen levels encourages hair regrowth.

The laser light increases blood flow. Where there is lower tissue oxygenation, there is lower blood flow because blood carries oxygen to the cells. In the blood, light also separates nitric oxide in the cells that make up the blood vessels. Nitric oxide dilates blood vessels to increase blood flow. Increasing nitric oxide levels in the blood improves circulation of blood supply and encourages hair regrowth.

The laser light supports cell metabolism and synthesize of heat shock protein. A specific protein, HSP27 is utilized for follicle stem proliferation and division. More HSP27 protein in the scalp encourages hair growth.

The laser light generates a low grade acute tissue inflammation that encourages hair regrowth. Because LLLT encourages tissue oxygenation and cellular metabolism, it also encourages the activity of reactive oxygen specifics (ROS) in a controlled and beneficial degree in the scalp. In a low acute dose, ROS in the scalp is necessary to activate protective genes which encourage cell proliferation, along with specific growth factors associated with hair regrowth.

The laser light can inhibit and breakdown dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a male hormone that can cause hair loss in both males and females who are genetically susceptible. 5-alpha reductase is an enzyme that converts free testosterone into tissue DHT. LLLT can inhibit 5-alpha reductase and prevent DHT from collecting in the scalp. DHT causes loss of visible hair on the scalp due to progressive miniaturization of hair follicles and is found to be elevated in balding scalp tissue and shrunken hair follicles.
